Charles Chavez, 29, of Lubbock was sentenced to 99 years in prison Tuesday morning. Chavez was convicted on December 8 by a jury for continuous sexual abuse of a child. His sentencing was decided by a judge.
Chavez was an employee of the Boys and Girls Club in the summer of 2014 when allegations first came to light. At trial, there was evidence that Chavez was taking kids into his home and sexually abusing them. At first, police were told of three children. Later it was determined to be four.
During the trial, Chavez testified on his own behalf. He claimed he was sexually abused, sold and tortured as a 5-year-old. Prosecutors argued to the jury that his history did not just justify his choice to in turn sexually abuse children.
At the time of his conviction, the Boys and Girls Club had no comment.
Barron Slack, prosecutor said, “This is a guy who is working at Boys and Girls Club — places where kids play. He’s preying on parents who trust him. It doesn’t get worse.”
Slack said, “Obviously, the case and the facts of the case merited such a sentence from the judge. So, [it’s a] sad day in a lot of ways with the facts of that case, but we’re pleased with the verdict.”
