Cuba’s former president, Fidel Castro, has died at age 90, according to Cuban state TV.
No further details were immediately available from state media. Global news outlets reported the news late Friday.
“He reshaped Cuba in his image, for both bad and good,” Robert Pastor, a former national security adviser for President Jimmy Carter in the 1970s, said in a 2012 interview with CNN.
“There are few individuals in the 20th century who had a more profound impact on a single country than Fidel Castro had in Cuba,” Pastor told CNN.
Castro’s supports credit him as a man who reclaimed Cuba for its citizens. Opponents criticized him for his oppressive style.
The ailing Communist revolutionist did live long enough to see his country’s relationship with the United States grow in recent years. President Barack Obama announced a re-establishment in diplomatic relations between the two countries in December.
Castro’s brother, Raul, came into power in 2008.
