The woman who used to live in the same home where a shooting occurred that led to the death of a Lubbock teenager says she never experienced violence in the neighborhood when she lived there.

Dessini Davila-Sandoval claimed she lived at the same house in 2014 where Preston Prado, 18, was shot by the homeowner Tuesday night.

“It was a quiet neighborhood,” she said. “Nothing crazy going on, ever.”

Emergency crews responded to the home, on 32nd Street near University Avenue to a report of a robbery and possible shots fired.

Officers found Prado with a gunshot wound, and he was taken to University Medical Center, where he later died, Lubbock Police said.

The homeowner and other people on the property were questioned by homicide detectives.

“The call sheet that the officers responded to advised that a person showed up to the residence, he was allowed inside, I don’t know if he forced his way at this point, but he was inside the residence, an altercation occurred,” said Lieutenant Leath McClure on Tuesday night.

“Scary for sure,” said Nathan Ross, who currently lives across the street from where the shooting occurred.

“We’ve had a couple of reports of people trying to break into cars, people looking through  backyards, but that was when it was a little more serious and then of course it escalated into what happened the other night,” said Ryan Hawkins, who also lives on 32nd Street.

“Crazy to think about that happened just right next door,” Hawkins said.

Davila-Sandoval explained that she moved with her husband to another Lubbock residence after she had a daughter.

“It could have happened to anyone there,” she said.

Davila-Sandoval said she was relieved she moved to another part of town before this violent incident.

“It shocked me [to learn about the shooting],” she said.

“We keep the doors locked and the porch lights on  and we hope that will be good enough,” Hawkins said. “But we are prepared and we will be on the lookout for anything suspicious that might be happening.”

Another neighbor said he had not seen any incidents in the eight years he has lived on 32nd Street.

The investigation into Prado’s death was ongoing as of Wednesday.
