A man is lucky to be alive after a freak accident in Roscoe on Monday.

The Sweetwater Fire Chief says two grandparents and their grandson, 10, were traveling from Lubbock to Roscoe down Highway 84 when they came upon a construction zone.

Everything was seemingly normal, but in a flash, chaos ensued.

A piece of metal flew through the windshield of the car, impacting the grandfather – the driver – on the right side of his face, knocking him unconscious.

Their vehicle began to drift into the other lane, so the grandmother did whatever she could to dissuade the terrifying situation.

She was able to keep her calm and steer the car away from impending trouble in the other lane.

Her husband’s face was severely injured, and he was unresponsive, but she still managed to turn the car off and coast it safely onto the shoulder of the road.

Authorities were unaware of what was going on until a desperate 9-1-1 call came through to dispatchers.

The boy was on the line. His grandfather, he said, was covered in blood. He didn’t know where they were or what had happened, but he needed help.

Roscoe Police and other emergency crews searched endlessly for the family, and finally, they were found.

The grandfather was taken to Rolling Plains Hospital until he was stabilized. Then he was evacuated by air to a hospital in Lubbock where he underwent facial reconstruction surgery.

Four metal plates were implanted into his upper and lower jaw. He is currently recovering and is doing exceptionally well.
