As of Thursday evening, the forecast for Lubbock included rain, drizzle and freezing rain starting Friday and continuing Friday night.

The City of Lubbock on Thursday said it will prepare for winter storm conditions.

The KAMC Storm Team Weather Lab said conditions would be worse to the northeast of Lubbock.

“We’re not going to say Lubbock is completely out of the woods for freezing rain,” said Chief Meteorologist Ron Roberts.  But there was little doubt that areas such as Amarillo and Clarendon would be at higher risk.

“No question that traveling to the north or northeast is going to be difficult,” Roberts said.

Lubbock has a metropolitan heat island effect which can reduce the risk of freezing rain.  But it was still in the forecast and still the subject of a special weather statement from the National Weather Service.

Rain or freezing rain were also in Lubbock’s forecast for Saturday.

“By Sunday,” Roberts said, “this could be a thunderstorm event.”

Widespread rain could be expected on Sunday with the possibility of “sleet or pea size hail.”

Roberts said, “Some locations are going to receive rainfall above one inch.”
