The Frenship High School Band is headed to Disney World in March to participate in an educational workshop where they will learn how to play background music for movies.
“The production crew from Disney is going to bring the students in with their instruments and they’re going to learn some background music for a movie,” Band Director Tom SoRelle said. “Then, they are going to show them how to put the music with the movie. So, when the kids leave there they will have actually made a little background music for a movie.”
SoRelle said the school does the Disney trip every four years so every class gets the chance to go.
SoRelle said trips like this are important for more than just educational purposes.
“It helps us with retention of students,” SoRelle said. “More students can come in the band, it helps us with students wanting to stay in the band because they have these special kind of events.”
SoRelle said the band saw a 27% increase in enrollment last year.
Students said their teachers also play a huge role in making the band enjoyable.
“I think that they’re pretty awesome they do a great job of managing all 350 of us,” Band member Kaylen Meers said.
Band members have to pay their own way for the Disney trip but students said it’s worth it because it gives them good experience if they want to play at the next level.
“It’s a lot of fun you just have a lot of fun hanging out with them and it’s a great experience to be a part of the Frenship band,” Meers said.
