Texas Tech’s hot hitting that led to a 3-1 opening weekend continued in the Red Raiders 16-1 win over New Mexico State in Tuesday’s home opener.

Orlando Garcia was 4-for-5 at the plate with two home runs and seven runs batted in against the Aggies.

“A guy drives in seven runs that’s a pretty big day,” head coach Tim Tadlock said. “Not many guys do that and hit a couple ball out of the ballpark.  There’s a lot of guys doing things to set that up in front of him but if you had to pick a guy today what a day he had.”

The junior shortstops first homer was a three-run shot in the sixth inning that gave Texas Tech a 7-1 lead.

Garcia followed that up with a grand slam in the seventh inning.

“I think you have a plan and stick with it,” Garcia said. “Just let the game come to you.”

Big 12 Player of the Week Hunter Hargrove was 1-for-5 with three runs batted in.

John Henry Gonzalez picked up the win after giving up one run and striking out five in 5.1 innings.

Texas Tech begins a four-game series with the University of California at 2 p.m. Friday at Rip Griffin Park.
