According to experts, two-thirds of adults make the New Year’s resolution to get in shape and 73% don’t reach their goal.

For Derek Sudduth, January 1 means it’s time to hit the gym.

“I’ve gotta say I slacked off quite a bit at the end of last year, so it’s a fresh start, a new beginning.”

Bodyworks Personal Trainer Adrian Abraham says Derek isn’t the only one who finds himself revisiting his health club after the New Year.

“We do get a lot of new people who have never worked out before and they feel like January is a good time to come in,” Abraham said, “But we try to encourage people and welcome them into the gym and make sure we show them the ropes and how to do things correctly so they don’t get discouraged and they’ll stick with it a little more.”

Many people, like Derek, face the same challenges trying to keep their resolution to get fit.

“I am total human-nature, I’ll start out strong, and then I have some problems at the end of the summer and especially in the winter when all of these good foods are on the table and the buffet is full of cookies and all of these things that are hard to turn down,” Sudduth said.

Abraham says that no matter the case, it’s not impossible to reach your goals…but don’t expect immediate results.

“You’re going to feel a little bit overwhelmed, but just come in and do what you need to do. Stay on track with your nutrition and things will work out for the best.”

The trainer’s words of advice? If you’re motivated to get in shape, just stick with it.

“If it was easy and everybody would be doing it all the time so it’s not going to be easy, so you have to stay on track and stay on course and give it a shot.”
