Relatives visiting their loved ones that have passed on found themselves shocked and sad when they arrived to the Lubbock City Cemetery on Christmas Day.

Lubbock Police said there will be an investigation after at least 15 tombstones were found damaged and turned over near Dogwood and Juniper.

Hearing word of what happened, Josephine Quirino said she immediately got in her car and drove to the cemetery to check on her parent’s graves. It was there she discovered that her mother’s tombstone had been turned to the ground, and her father’s picture scratched out. Her mother, Pauline Zarazua was buried in 1970 when she died in the tornado that killed 26 people in Lubbock.

“We grew up without a mom, and the memories we have of her.. and now she’s.. she got vandalized, and that’s not right, it makes me mad, it makes me angry.” said Quirino.

The Lubbock Police Department said they will be getting with city employees of the cemetery on Tuesday to figure out how to go forward with the investigation.
