The Storm Prediction Center issued an updated outlook for Thursday that puts Lubbock and the South Plains at a slight risk of severe weather.

KAMC Storm Team Chief Meteorologist Ron Roberts said areas to the east of Lubbock like Post, Crosbyton, Floydada, and White River Lake would have a higher risk than Lubbock.

Roberts said, “This afternoon, we’re watching to see where the dry line is going to set up.  It looks like thunderstorms will develop … just east of us.”

A second round of thunderstorms could develop over the South Plains.

“These initial thunderstorms should be the ones that have the most dangerous impacts,” Roberts said.

Specifically, those risks could be hail with 2-inch diameter or more, and damaging wind gusts.  Roberts said some of the afternoon storm cells could be “briefly tornadic.”

Roberts said arrangements should be made to keep pets and vehicles safe from hail and high winds.

Overnight storms were less likely to be tornadic but Roberts said, “We cannot rule it out.”
