Summer youth classes emphasizing hands-on learning will be available June 6-10 for children in grades 1-5 at the National Ranching Heritage Center (NRHC) and International Cultural Center (ICC) on the Texas Tech University campus.

“These classes will stimulate the imagination for children who want to travel the world through art and music or experience what pioneer life was like 150 years ago,” explained Julie Hodges, Helen DeVitt Jones Director of Education at the NRHC. “There’s something for everyone. Some children might be making a Western movie from their own script while others prepare themselves for the Olympic games in Brazil.”

Unlike past summer classes, students must choose to attend either an entire half-day of classes or a whole day. The cost of each half-day session is $50 with the morning session extending from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. and the afternoon session scheduled for 1:15 to 4:30 p.m.

“Class size will be limited to 15 students on a first-come, first-served basis, so parents should register their children as soon as possible,” Hodges said. Class information, registration and a downloadable brochure are available at ranchingheritage.org/summer-youth-classes/.

Morning classes will meet at the NRHC and afternoon classes will meet at the ICC. Students who take classes both sessions will be escorted by staff to the ICC and should bring a sack lunch. Snacks will be provided for the morning and afternoon sessions.

Students who have completed either the first or second grades and want to attend the morning session can choose one of two options: Option 1 (two classes) – Pioneer Living and Water Wranglers or Option 2 (one class with a mid-morning break) – Ranch Art.

Students who have completed either the third through the fifth grades and want to attend the morning session can choose one of two options: Option 1 (two classes) – Animal Science and Ranch Wildlife or Option 2 (one class with a mid-morning break) – Western Movie Making.

Two class options are available for all ages in the afternoon: Option 3 (two classes) – Olympics and Music Around the World or Option 4 (one class with a mid-afternoon break) – Culture Through Art.
