A new study suggests young children with mothers on prescription opioids face much higher risks of overdose than other children. Canadian researchers tracked records since 2002 in Ontario and found half the children treated for overdose were under two and that codeine, oxycodone, and methadone were usually involved.

The rate of infants born with opioid addiction has also increased fivefold over the last decade. The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends a public health response rather than a punitive approach against the mother. Researchers warned prosecuting pregnant women may discourage prenatal care.

Researchers in St. Louis said developers have successfully designed a vaccine that protects lab mice against the zika virus. The next step is tests on people.
