Researchers at Massachusetts General Hospital said smoking significantly reduces the lifespan of people living with HIV, possibly more than the disease does itself. The study found smokers with HIV can develop related diseases, such as lung cancer, more often than those who aren’t infected and cut their lifespan by more than eight years.
Health experts said nearly 90 percent of American children eat too much salt, well in excess of dietary guidelines. A study looked at the eating habits of more than 2,000 children. Researchers said a preference for salty foods developed early in life continues on into adulthood, putting them at greater risk for cardiovascular problems.
Doctors blame daytime sleepiness and a tendency to stay up late on teens’ being out of sync with school schedules. Researchers said their finding supports starting school later in the day to better match teen’s natural body-clock patterns.
