Healthcast : A Study on Antidepressant Use During Early Pregnancy

A new study found that a mother’s use of antidepressant medication during early pregnancy does not increase the risk of the baby developing autism. The research in the Journal of the American Medical Association also found no increased risk for attention deficit hyperactivity disorder. It does however see evidence that antidepressants in the first trimester increase the risk for premature birth.

Patients with a severe form of epilepsy may be able to reduce their seizures with the use of medical cannabis. A study for the American Academy of Neurology followed more than 200 people with a type of epilepsy that is particularly difficult to treat. Among those using a liquid form of cannabis medicine, nearly 40-percent were able to cut their seizures in half.

Doctors have been trying out steroid medications to treat a sore throat. A study in JAMA found they might not be that effective. Researchers looked at more than 500 patients with sore throats. Those treated with steroids were no more likely to feel better after 24 hours than those who received a placebo.
