New research from Britain suggested a gene that makes us eat more sugar can also help decrease body fat. Researchers said the gene, which is made mostly in the liver, also tends to have people eat less fat. But scientists found the gene can also redistribute fat to the upper body which can cause high blood pressure.

Another British study found women with a common hormone condition are more likely to be diagnosed with mental health disorders like depression and bipolar disorder. Polycystic ovary syndrome affects about 10 percent of women of childbearing age. The study’s author said their children are at greater risk of developing ADHD and autism.

A new device could one day revolutionize drug treatment programs. Engineers at U.C. San Diego worked on a miniature chip that can be injected under the skin to detect drug and alcohol consumption. Sensors in the device would transmit information wirelessly to a smartwatch. The engineers believed the single-use technology could be an alternative to breathalyzers and blood tests.
