Researchers are cautioning patients to avoid using long-acting opioids whenever possible. A study at Vanderbilt found that taking opioids to manage moderate to severe chronic pain not only leads to unintentional overdoses, it also raises the risk of cardiovascular death.

Eating a diet full of plant-based foods may substantially lower the risk of developing type 2 diabetes. A study at Harvard followed the eating habits of more than 200,000 people. Those who consumed more fruits, vegetables and nuts and less red and processed meat had a 20% lower risk of diabetes.

Researchers are also finding the benefits of eating whole grains. A study in the British Medical Journal said people who increased to two servings per day of whole grain breads, cereals and bran faced a lower risk of major chronic diseases, including cancer, stroke and diabetes.
