Smoking thickens the walls of the heart and reduces its ability to pump effectively, according to a new study that was published by the American Heart Association. Researchers tracked more than 4,500 older adults and said a thicker heart can lead to heart failure, even in people who do not have cardiovascular disease.

European researchers said women who consume omega-3 fatty acids, like those found in fish and flaxseed oil, are at an increased risk of developing type 2 diabetes. The study involved more than 71,000 women over a 14 year period. Non-overweight women who consumed more than 1.6 grams of omega-3 fatty acids per day had the highest risk.

90% of household dust is filled with toxic chemicals, according to a new study from George Washington University. Researchers said phthalates, phenols and flame retardant chemicals originate from items like furniture and cleaning products. People can inhale, ingest or absorb them through the skin. Young children who are crawling or playing on the floor face the highest risk.
