Type 2 diabetes patients have a new, less rigorous, blood sugar control target. Doctors used to recommend average blood sugar levels between 6.5 and 7 percent. Now the American College of Physicians said the harm can outweigh the benefits when taking medication to reach that goal. It recommended an A1C level between 7 and 8 percent.
Wearing a helmet helps protect a motorcycle rider’s neck, according to researchers at the University of Wisconsin. They studied patients who crashed their bikes and found those who wore helmets had a significantly reduced likelihood of cervical spine injury. Helmet laws in the U.S. vary from state to state.
Researchers at Columbia University looked at a New York City program that awards low income families cash for positive activities, including preventative health care. Researchers found program participants were more likely to have dental check-ups and less likely to forgo medical care due to cost. They also reported improvement in their outlook and overall well-being.
