People who use opioids have an increased risk of serious infections like pneumonia and meningitis. Researchers at Vanderbilt University Medical Center found the link was strongest for high dose pain killers which can suppress the immune system.

Researchers said older women with a first degree family history of breast cancer in a mother, sister, or daughter should consider this risk factor when weighing their screening options.
