A new study sheds some light on who’s most at risk of developing an opioid addiction. Columbia University researchers found that more than 60 percent of opioid overdose victims were diagnosed with chronic pain at some point in their lives. Many also suffered from anxiety or depression.
A separate study looked at the growing use of an opioid overdose antidote called naloxone. Scientists found the drug is both safe and effective when first responders administer it in the field. The study’s authors noted more research needs to be done to determine the best way to dispense the opioid antidote.
