Stroke survivors are prescribed statins to prevent a second, possibly more serious stroke. A study at the University of Cambridge finds 30 percent of patients stop taking the medication. Researchers said people are concerned about side effects, including memory loss and muscle pain.
People use artificial sweeteners to lose weight but new research shows they may have the opposite effect. A team of researchers in Canada reviewed dozens of studies on sweeteners, including aspartame and stevia. They found an increased risk for obesity, diabetes, and high blood pressure.
A friendly visit can make a difference for a person suffering from dementia. A study of more than 800 Alzheimers patients in the U.K. looked at benefits from just one hour a week of social interaction. They found those visits, combined with more personalized care, can improve dementia patients’ quality of life and reduce agitation.
