Hotel pools or hot tubs accounted for one third of all treated swimming-related illnesses in the U.S. from 2000 through 2014, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Operators of pools and water playgrounds have cleaning and disinfecting guidelines they need to follow and the CDC urged people with diarrhea to stay out of the water and swimmers to refrain from swallowing pool water to avoid getting sick.

Another study revealed chronic social isolation has a negative effect on the brain. Scientists at Cal-Tech found mice who were isolated overproduced a certain chemical in their brains, leading them to become more fearful, aggressive and hypersensitive.
