More than 80 percent of sudden cardiac arrests in competitive sports could not have been predicted by screening programs. That’s according to a study in the New England Journal of Medicine. Researchers found that the screening programs for cardiac conditions are not effective and may prevent healthy athletes from participating.
A new MIT study found microbes living in the gut may help protect against high blood pressure. Researchers found that a strain of intestinal bacteria seems to stop a high-salt diet from triggering an inflammatory response which has been linked to hypertension.
Heavy drinkers and smokers may be more likely to look older than their age. Researchers in Denmark have been following a group of people for more than 40 years. They found a link between heavy drinking and smoking with visible signs of aging. But light to moderate drinking showed no link.
