A new British study showed steroids are not effective for respiratory infections in people who don’t have asthma or chronic lung disease. Researchers used a five day steroid to treat nearly 400 non-asthmatic patients who had acute chest infections. They found the drug did not reduce the length or severity of their illness.
Taking anti-depressant drugs containing serotonin may make tinnitus, or ringing in the ears, worse. Scientists in Oregon discovered that exposure to serotonin, which is in many anti-anxiety and depression medicines, can make brain auditory nerve fibers hyper-sensitive.
While up to 50 percent of women start their pregnancy overweight or obese, European researchers said a mother’s weight during pregnancy is not the biggest factor in determining her child’s metabolism. Their study found family lifestyles and shared genetics are the main contributors.
