The CDC said more than 2 million cases of sexually transmitted diseases were reported in the U.S. last year, the highest number ever. Most were cases of chlamydia, with nearly half of those infections occurring in young women. Health officials urged state and local health departments to focus on prevention and improve screening, especially in pregnant women.
Researchers in Boston found a new biomarker that could allow doctors to diagnose the degenerative brain disease known as CTE in living patients. Currently, CTE, found increasingly among football players, is only able to be diagnosed after death. Scientists are hopeful the discovery could lead to prevention and treatment for c-t-e.
A study in the journal “Circulation Research” found umbilical cord stem cells could improve heart muscle function. Doctors looked at 30 patients with stable heart failure. Those who were given umbilical cord stem cell infusions showed improvement in their heart’s ability to pump blood.
