Monday, March 13 is National Nap Day all because of the start of Daylight Saving Time.

“The day after the time change where is there is a large amount of motor vehicle accidents, industrial accidents, people missing work because they got late because they couldn’t fall asleep,” said Dr. Christopher Rose. Dr. Rose is the medical director at Covenant Sleep Services.

“Because of the increased motor vehicle accidents, industrial accidents, other things, that hour you miss, they made that day national nap day,” he said.

When it comes to sleep and making sure you’re getting enough of sleep, Dr. Rose said he had some advice on ways to have good sleep hygiene.

The key, according to Dr. Rose, is routine.

“Go to bed at a proper time that allows you at least seven hours, if not 8 hours, of sleep time,” he said.

“About an hour before bedtime, turn down all your electronics, all your screens, turn the lights down dim, take a hot shower at that time,” Dr. Rose. said.

While that’s good advice for a bedtime routine, Dr. Rose also said it’s important to keep a routine in the morning as well.

“Don’t vary your wakeup time from weekend to weekday more than just 30 minutes to an hour,” he said.
