“We want everyone who stays here to feel secure that they are safe in our environment. Because you can’t heal and you can’t get better, if you’re worried about those type of things,” said Kim McAuley, the quality and safety manager for Covenant Health. “We don’t want people in here who shouldn’t be in here.”

To protect patients and their families, Covenant Children’s Hospital said they are taking precautions throughout their hallways. From front desk security to touch safety panels installed at doorways. Inside the patients rooms, they are scanning patients hospital bracelets and leaving behind “Care Cards” that remind families to speak up and voice their concerns.

“It’s important for parents to speak up and say, ‘Hey I don’t understand or are you sure that’s right or do you mind if I get a second opinion?” Because it’s called practicing medicine for a reason. They are doing the best they can and no one is the same, so you are your child’s biggest advocate.  And if you can’t stand up for your child no one else will,” said Maggie Guthrie, chair of the hospital’s Family Advisory Council.
