With winter officially here, Covenant’s Dr. Stan Garrett shared some tips on how to stay safe in winter weather.

His first big piece of advice is to make sure you keep covered.

“As much as you can, you should cover the skin,” he said “That includes the face.”

He said to be aware of how cold it can feel outside, especially if there is some wind.

“Especially if the wind is blowing, it may be much colder than what the temperature gauge reads,” Dr. Garrett said.

If there is any ice outside, he said to make sure your shoes have a rubber sole and to be careful as you are walking.

“Take shorter steps, deliberate steps, make sure the foot that you plant is well planted before you take your next step.” he said “If you’re going up or down steps, hold on to the railing.”

When you travel during the winter months, Dr. Garrett said it can be important to make sure you have everything you need in your car.

“Take extra blankets in the car, extra coats, water, snacks, protein with sugar in them,” he said.

He also said to think about other items in your car that can help you if you slide off the road.

“An old blanket, anything, an old mat, put it in there, you can use that if you slide off and you need traction for your car,” Dr. Garrett said.
