There are more than 100 volunteers in the auxiliary at Covenant Children’s Hospital, and we got to hear the role volunteering played in the lives of two of those volunteers.
“I believe all the volunteers that are here have a servant’s heart,” Debby Horton said. “A God gift, they love the patients, they love the administration, they love the nurses. They wouldn’t be here if they didn’t have a servant heart.”
Horton is the supervisor of guest services and the auxiliary at Covenant Children’s Hospital. She oversees the more than 100 members of the auxiliary.
“I think you get more than you give, and I think we’ve both made new and dear friends,” Mary Woods said.
Mary and John Woods just recently celebrated their sixth wedding anniversary. The pair met volunteering together at Covenant Children’s Hospital.
“Soon after [John] started, he started bringing coffee to my partner and I at the information desk, and we thought he was really funny, and made us laugh, and ornery,” Mary said.
Mary’s been volunteering since 2005 and John started in 2010.
“She’s a sweetheart, and I just couldn’t live without her all the time,” John said.
“His pride and joy is his ’63 impala, and he took it on a lot of our dates,” Mary said. “One evening, he said, ‘You want to drive?’ and I said ‘What?’ So anyway, when he let me drive that ’63 impala, I thought he really likes me.”
“I’m glad we laugh a lot together,” Mary said. “Because there are times after you lose a spouse that are really tough, and I think we’ve been good for each other for many reasons, and I’m glad to share our lives together.”
The two can be found at the hospital on Friday mornings.
“They have fun, but they’re serious, they love what they do, and they support each other in every aspect of their life,” Debby said of the Woods.
