If you’ve ever had anyone in hospice care or you know someone who’s gone through the process, you know it’s a very difficult time.
But one woman in Lubbock is doing whatever she can to help these families out.
6 holidays out of the year, you’ll find Bonnie Hunt delivering baskets full of goodies for the families with loved ones at Hospice of Lubbock.
“I make them Valentine’s Day, Easter, Fourth of July, Halloween, Thanksgiving and Christmas,” says Hunt. “They have cookies in them, sweet bread, and candy. Whatever I can sample.”
And she’s very dedicated.
She’s never missed a holiday in 30 years of volunteering.
“It seems like a short period of time when you start adding it all up,” Hunt laughs. “I love to make people happy and I love to put a little joy in their life I guess you’d say.”
And when you start adding basket after basket, year after year, you get an unbelievable number.
“I’ve made well over 5,000 baskets,” Hunt says.
5,000 baskets full of goodies and love for people she’s never even met.
“I feel more blessed than they do recieving it,” Hunt explains. “Just knowing that you have brightened the day for somebody even if it’s just a little bit, I like that.”
But her kindness for others going through a difficult time doesn’t just stop with gift baskets.
She also sews memory bears, made from an article of clothing that belonged to a patient who passed away.
“I’ve made well over 200, probably around 300,” Bonnie explains. “It’s a touching thing to have something in remembrance.”
“Bonnie’s sense of giving is matched by her humbleness,” Cheryl Presley with Hospice of Lubbock says. “One of the greatest things about Bonnie is she doesn’t make a big deal about it and she just goes about what she does very quietly.”
And she says she’s not going to stop volunteering anytime soon.
“Once you enjoy something you don’t want to quit, you want to keep on going,” Bonnie explains.
Bonnie isn’t just making an impact here.
Just last year she was one of four volunteers, across the country, honored by the National Hospice Care Organization.
Volunteers are always needed for hundreds of organizations on the South Plains.
