Your parents probably read to you before you went to bed, and if you have kids you probably continued on with the tradition.
But what if you never learned how to read.
A group of volunteers is making sure kids are ahead of the game when it comes to reading and making sure these kids know that learning is fun.
It was all part of the United Way’s Day of Caring.
Volunteers from a handful of organizations from around Lubbock came out to Vanda Early Learning Center to read to children.
“I’m having a blast,” says volunteer Wes Condray. “I don’t have kids myself so this is amazing just to get out and play and help them and they’re helping me.”
Volunteer Seth Schulz agrees.
“Everyone’s here and we’re having a great time just interacting with the little kids. It couldn’t be better.” Schulz explains.
But it’s much more than just opening up a book. It’s important for the kids’ future.
“Studies show the more books that they have in the home the more prepared they are to start school and to succeed in school,” explains Nicole Ashley Lee with the United Way.
And the volunteers say it’s not just about making the kids happy. It’s about making a difference.
“It helps make the community a better place and that’s what West Texas stands for,” says Schulz.
“These kids are so happy and they just make your day better,” Condray says.
The kids also get to bring the books home to read with their parents.
Events like the ‘Day of Literacy’ wouldn’t be possible without volunteers.
The Volunteer Center of Lubbock is always looking for people to help out in our community.
