High School Students Returning From Lubbock Involved in Deadly Amarillo Crash

Students with Caprock High School in Amarillo were returning from an event in Lubbock when they were involved in a deadly traffic accident.  

Police said the students were in a Dodge Nitro.  It was was hit by a 2009 Scion going southbound in the northbound lanes of Interstate 27 at the 45th Street overpass in Amarillo.


The driver of Scion, Andrew Bradford Kinkead, 43, of Amarillo died. 

“Speed and alcohol are factors,” police said.  All five students in the Nitro were injured.

Amarillo Police released the following statement:

On June 7, 2015 at approximately 1:32 am Officers were dispatched to a car driving southbound in the northbound lanes on I-27. As Officers were arriving in the area they drove upon a severe motor vehicle collision in the 4500 block of I-27 on top of the 45th Ave overpass.

They discovered a 2009 Scion driven Andrew Bradford Kinkead, WM, 43 of Amarillo had been southbound in the northbound lanes of I-27. He struck a 2008 Dodge Nitro that had a driver and 4 passengers. All 5 subjects were transported to a local area hospital. Two of the five had severe but non-life threatening injuries. The other three had lesser non-life threatening injuries.

Kinkead died of injuries he received in the collision. Justice of the Peace Clay Houdashell has ordered a toxicology screen.

Speed and alcohol are factors in this collision. The Incident is being investigated by the Traffic Investigation squad of the Amarillo Police Dept.
