Winds were between 30 and 35 miles per hour today and Lubbock is only expecting stronger winds tomorrow. Certain jobs in the area are on high alert during this type of weather.
“Once it starts getting over that 35-40 mph range, people just need to be very cautious,” said Morris Locknane, the Fire Captain at Carlisle Fire Department.
Locknane says these types of winds are extremely dangerous and should be kept in mind as a fire hazard.
“All the grass is dormant and it will burn. Give your house some defendable space if you are in a high growth area. Get the weeds down, mow the grass down,” said Locknane.
He also wants to remind residents that this is just the beginning of the windy season.
“Anytime that the wind gets up, especially in late winter early spring, like what we’re coming into now,” said Locknane.
In addition to fire hazard he says these winds can become dangerous when driving.
“Watch out for other big vehicles, semis and stuff. A big gust of wind can move that vehicle on the road,” said Locknane.
Ronnie Mackey, a truck driver passing through Lubbock said he couldn’t agree more.
“It is just tough driving. I can only maintain a speed of 60 miles per hour,” said Mackey.
