With unusually high winter temperatures rolling in to the South Plains, residents were left eager for spring-time, and wondering how to take care of their yard.
“Right now we’re doing a lot of scalping and also pre-emergent on the lawns, also doing a lot of leaf cleanups and flower beds, just cleaning up getting it ready for spring,” Star Landscape Owner Steve Brown said.
Despite the nice weather, Brown said not to get too excited, because no matter the temperature, February is still too early to start a garden.
“Let’s say you start getting some plants starting to bud or bloom, and then you get a cold spell that comes in and kills them,” Brown said, “You think it’s good and everything is starting to bloom, and then if you get a hard freeze that’s not good.”
What Cindy Pegues with Holland Gardens said people can do now, however, is use pre-emergent weed prevention.
“What we’re doing is trying to put a pre-emergent down before all these weeds do come up, and with the warm temperatures, and the little bit of rain that we have had, we are getting some weeds that are already creeping up.”
Pegues recommends “A-Vert” because she said it lasts a little longer than some of the other pre-emergents on the market.
“Everyday, I get tons of calls, and I’m ready for them. I had a whole pallet up here for the weekend; we’ve already gone through that and we’re fixing to load it up again in about two days when I’ll have to re-stock again.”
