Earlier this morning, Sunday, April 17, 2016, around 3:00 a.m., New Mexico State Police officers responded to the scene of a fatal motor vehicle crash. This crash occurred near mile marker 48 on State Road 18 south of Hobbs, New Mexico.
The initial investigation revealed that a southbound vehicle, driven by Rene Caraveo (17) from Hobbs, New Mexico, swerved in an attempt to avoid striking a dog. The driver then lost control of the vehicle and it overturned several time. The passenger, Wesley Leija (18) from Hobbs, New Mexico, was not wearing a seatbelt and was ejected from the vehicle.
The passenger, Wesley Leija, sustained fatal injuries and was pronounced deceased at the scene.
The driver, Rene Caraveo, sustained injuries and was transported to Lea Regional Hospital.
This vehicle crash is still under investigation.
