Further information is being released by Sheriff Ray Scifres regarding the inmate death at the Hockley County jail. The individual has been identified as Jimmy Dale Taylor, 61, of Levelland. On Monday, March 13, 2017, Mr. Taylor was found deceased in his cell at approximately 5:00 AM.
Detention officers found Mr. Taylor when making rounds and when it was discovered he was not responsive, emergency medical services was contacted. Also contacted were the Texas Rangers, and the Texas Commission on Jail Standards. On March 13, 2017, in the initial release, it was believed there were no suspicious circumstances surrounding Mr. Taylor’s death. An autopsy was conducted this morning [Tuesday morning] in Lubbock. Based on the findings, the manner of death was ruled to be natural.
Mr. Taylor, 61, was being housed for a warrant issued related to a parole violation, and had been in custody for approximately thirty days awaiting a determination on his parole status. Mr. Taylor was taken to an area clinic on March 2, 2017, after we received a request for medical treatment. Mr. Taylor was prescribed medication commonly used to treat certain infections and types of pneumonia following that visit.
“We were obviously saddened by the situation, and we continue to offer prayers for Mr. Taylor’s family and friends. Our office will continue to cooperate fully with any and all inquiries into the matter,” commented Sheriff Scifres.
Since this is an ongoing investigation, all findings will be forwarded to the Texas Rangers, the Texas Attorney General’s Office, and the Texas Commission on Jail Standards, and no other information will be released until the investigations are complete.
