LUBBOCK, TX — Lubbock Fire Rescue was called to the scene of a natural gas line at about 12:45 Wednesday in the area of 98th Street and Chicago Avenue. After 3 pm, Lubbock Fire said people were able to return to their homes, after capping the leak.

LFR said, “Traffic is being diverted around the area and a small evacuation of the surrounding homes is being conducted as a precaution.”

A staging area was set up at 98th and Slide Road for those who were evacuated.  A 4 inch gas main was damaged possibly by some construction work in the area.

LRF later said, “LFR has evacuated approximately 40 residents in the area of 98th to 102nd St & Belmont to Elkhart.” There were about 160 homes in total in that area.

“It’s more of a precautionary deal, if that gas happened to be accumulating in a home and found a source of ignition, we’re just making sure everybody’s out, that something like that doesn’t occur so that we don’t end up with some kind of injuries,” Division Chief Steve Holland said.

LFR said there were no injuries.
