At approximately 11:45 PM on Tuesday, August 2nd, 2016, Hobbs Fire Department was activated to an explosion that affected a home in the west 400 block of Skelly in Hobbs, NM. The cause of the explosion is undetermined as of now but it did cause a complete destruction of the home.

Due to safety concerns, gas and electricity for the entire block of 400 West Skelly has been temporarily shut down by order of incident commander until the investigation is complete.

There was one victim who was woken by the explosion and did self-extricate himself with potentially serious injuries. The victim was transported to Lea Regional Medical Center for medical evaluation at around midnight.

There was no sign of a fire or scorch marks on the building or materials within or surrounding the scene. The investigation as to the cause of the explosion is ongoing by the Hobbs Fire Department Fire Marshall and City of Hobbs Building officials.
