Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump are in their last sprint to the finish line, stepping out in full force this weekend to make their final plea to voters across the nation.
The latest polls show the race is tightening in key battleground states with Clinton holding a slight lead over Trump.
“I think it is going to be a great night for republicans in Texas and around the country,” Texas Republican Party Chairman Tom Mechler said.
Mechler says he is already predicting a Trump win in Texas, citing an NBC News/Wall Street Journal/Marist poll released Friday showing Trump leading Clinton in Texas by 9 percentage points.
“I’d love to see him win by 40 percent,” Mechler said, “but I think we are going to be in double digits in Texas.”
Texas democrats say a Clinton victory isn’t out of reach. They’re using these last few days to heighten campaign efforts across the state, hoping to turn the Lone Star State blue.
“I think the real thing to look at when Texas goes to the polls and finishes voting next Tuesday is just going to be where the race ends up,” Steve Vladeck a professor at the University of Texas school of law said.
Vladeck says even without a Clinton win, it will still be a victory for Texas democrats. He says this is the closest a democrat has come to winning the lone star state in decades, and even a loss on Tuesday could lead to a victory next election.
“As the demographics in Texas and in the whole country shift, I think folks are going to be minding the data that comes out of next Tuesday to see where they should emphasize, where they should put in work to try to turn Texas, as the democrats would say, “blue” or at least purple by this time four years from now,” Vladeck said.
So far more than 4 million Texans have already cast their ballots during early voting.
