On Saturday afternoon, Aransas County Judge C.H. “Burt” Mills, Jr. said one person died and 12 to 14 others were treated for injuries in Aransas County overnight. Hurricane Harvey came ashore late Friday night.
Regarding the fatality, Mills said, “It was someone caught in a fire in his house during the storm. We didn’t know about it until today.”
Specific details were not yet released about the fatality. Officials speaking in Rockport said the damage appeared to be in the hundreds of millions of dollars.
Many homes were inaccessible because of downed trees and storm debris. Officials said there was damage to the local school system including two auditoriums.
Officials did not rule out the possibility of more damage from flooding as rain continued, and they did not rule out the possibility that more injuries or deaths might be discovered.
