“In God We Trust” decals are spreading across the Basin as another local law enforcement agency joins the club.
The Childress Police Department started the trend last year and since then, Pecos County and Brewster County Sheriff’s offices, along with Fort Stockton police, and Midland constables have all jumped on the band wagon.
Today marks a new era for the Ector County Sheriffs Office. All marked vehicles will now show the “In God We Trust” bumper sticker.
According to Ector County Sheriff Mark Donaldson this is something he strongly believes in.
“Our money has the term, “In God We Trust” on all of our U.S. currency, so if it’s good enough for our currency it’s certainly good enough for vehicles that our deputies drive around in.”, says Sheriff Donaldson.
Soon to follow in this trend is the Midland County Sheriffs Office.
We spoke with Sheriff Gary Painter who says their marking their vehicles because the community asked for it.
“There are people in the public that feel like that it is an important statement to make. When it comes out and it’s been expressed people are asking us, “So why don’t you put it on your vehicles? “Why aren’t you saying it.” and they’re right; I should be. I’m not afraid of it and we’re going to put it on there.”, says Sheriff Painter.
Sheriff Donaldson says all 30 of the marked vehicles in their fleet including jail and animal control units will be marked with the phrase.
Sheriff Painter says he expects to have all of their vehicles marked with the phrase within the next month.
