A Lubbock family is hoping to spread awareness of child abuse prevention after their two-month old daughter suffered shaken baby syndrome at the hand of a friend.
In 2013, Rochelle Salinas and Junior Castillo dropped their newborn off at their babysitter’s who was a family friend.
A few hours later, the babysitter called Salinas and Castillo to say Logan was on her way to the hospital.
The babysitter said Logan choked on milk, but brain scans showed doctor’s at UMC Logan suffered major brain trauma.
“The reason it was so hard for me to accept it is because this was someone that I trusted and I knew,” Salinas said.
The Mayo Clinic defines shaken baby syndrome as a serious brain injury resulting from forcefully shaking an infant or toddler.
The Family Guidance and Outreach Center said four children are abused everyday in Lubbock County.
“It’s something that people think they could never imagine them doing but whenever you’re frustrated to the point of no end, you know we have a lot of teen moms in the area, immaturity and not educating yourself and not knowing what your options are, it happens more than you think,” Family Guidance and Outreach Center coordinator Leslie Breslin said.
Breslin said the best way to make sure you caregiver is safe to use is to ask for references and check them thoroughly.
