Jodey Arrington defeated Glen Robertson in the May 24 Primary Runoff election for District 19 Congress which covers Lubbock, Abilene and a lot of territory in between.
With 82 percent of precincts reporting district-wide, Arrington had 23,115 (54%) and Robertson had 19,904 (46%). Singling out just Lubbock County, Arrington had 10,507 votes; Robertson had 8,965.
At about 8:44 pm, the Texas Tribune via Twitter declared the race in favor of Arrington.
In a victory speech, Arrington started off by saying, “Am I supposed to say something?”
A crowd had already been cheering and cheered even louder.
“This isn’t about me and this isn’t about the Arrington family. This is about West Texas. This is about our country” Arrington told his supporters.
He spoke of the need to make West Texas prosperous for the next generation. He also talked of taking action in a way that would reflect the character and class of West Texas.
“It’s a big day for me. It’s a big day for all of us because this was not about me. This was a team effort. A lot of people throughout the district, 29 counties, eight months, worked tirelessly to get to this position,” he told EverythingLubbock.com.
“I’m grateful, immensely grateful,” he added. “Profoundly humbled by the fact that the voters put their trust and confidence in me. The best way I can think them is to work hard represent them well, and deliver results.”
“At the end of the day, as we’ve said leadership is about delivering the mail,” he continued. “As one farmer told me you got to put the plow on the ground so that’s what we’re going to do. Try to solve some of these problems take them out on and ready to go to work.”
