A judge reduced bond for murder suspect John Henry Allen, 20, of Lubbock.  Allen’s bond had been $500,000 but on Wednesday State District Judge Jim Bob Darnell reset the bond to $35,000.

The order subjected Allen to electronic monitoring, a curfew of 10:00 pm to 6:00 am, the requirement to have (or get) a job, and a prohibition on drinking or going to bars.  Allen was also ordered to seek outpatient treatment at Dove Tree Ranch, reside in Lubbock County, and check in with the adult probation office once a week.

Allen was charged with murder for the January 14 stabbing death of Zachary Kafer, 20, who was a Texas Tech student.

In a court hearing Tuesday, Allen’s defense attorneys raised the issue of self defense while requesting a bond reduction.  They claimed that Kafer was trying to attack Allen through a car window in the 2400 block of Broadway.  They claimed Allen swung a pocket knife through the window in self defense.

A police report said after the altercation, Allen went home and slept.

Kafer was taken by friends to University Medical Center where he later died.
