Daniel Jones, 11, wanted to be an entrepreneur, so he joined the Lubbock Chamber of Commerce’s 2019 Young Entrepreneur Academy.

In April, Daniel won first place in a competition for his idea ‘Fort in a Box.’

His success also landed him a spot in the regional, and possibly, national competition in Rochester, NY on May 3rd, where he will he will compete against other kids from across the region and country for a chance to win a scholarship and other prizes.

“I kind of froze,” Daniel said. “I was just shocked. I thought someone else was going to win.”

Daniel said his idea was inspired by his love for building forts when he grew up. He said his idea is different from other products because it is durable, and the fort size is versatile.

His twin sister, Leah, also attended the academy and said she is proud of her brother’s accomplishments.

“My jaw literally dropped,” Leah said.

She said she came up with an idea of her own called “My Four Chair Feet,” decorative socks for furniture to prevent them from scratching hard wood.

Their mom, Amy Jones, said she is incredibly proud of the effort put in by kids in the entire program.

“The fact that they can get up in front of a room full of people, answer questions at 11, its just amazing to me,” she said.

The competition also includes a People’s Choice Award, where friends and family can vote by text during the live-streamed competition.

Daniel’s family is asking for the public’s support to help him win.

His family set up a Facebook event to help people know when and how to vote for him next Friday.
