At only 16, Mackinley Malone was shot and killed near 34th Street and Joliet Avenue.

Police notified the family by knocking on his grandma’s door late at night, according to the family. Mackiney’s grandmother is the legal guardian of him and his brother, said his aunt, Chandra Malone.

“We were in the room waiting for the surgery to be over when the doctors told us he had died on the table. They sat in the room while we wept for Mac and the loss of him,” said Chandra.

His mother, who visited Lubbock last week from College Station, said she was heartbroken after she heard her son passed away.

“I don’t know who or why somebody needs to shoot somebody in the back and drive away. It’s really disgusting, honestly it is,” said Shay Moore, his mother.

Police are “working tirelessly” to locate the suspect, Chandra said. The police and the family do not have any information at this time regarding the investigation.

They ask that if you want to make a donation for Mackinley’s arrangement, donate directly to The People’s Bank. They set up an account under his name: Mackinley Malone.

“This is the best way to insure the money goes directly to him,” said Chandra.

They also ask that instead of sending flowers or food, donate to the Boys and Girls Club in Mackinley’s name.

“It is a great organization that keeps things like this from happening to kids,” Chandra said.
