LUBBOCK, Texas– Runners hit the asphalt on Loop 289 for the second annual Mayor’s Marathon on Sunday.

More than 1,200 people participated in the event, hosted by the Mayor’s Fitness Council.

“It’s a good day in Lubbock, Texas,” said Mayor Dan Pope.

Runners had the opportunity to participate in the full marathon, half-marathon, 5K, and fun run.

Peter Lukes (2:57:00) and Tara Carr (3:12:12) got first place in the marathon. Michael Vasquez came in first for the marathon in hand cycling (1:54:26). All three times qualified for the Boston Marathon.

Colton Hollis (1:14:44) and Lyndi Hanson (1:32:23) placed first in the half-marathon.

Emma Lopez (00:26:15) and Cody Suntken (00:27:30) placed first in the 5K.

Mayor Dan Pope said he was happy to see so many people community motivated to be healthy and fit.

“I think that is what it is all about. It is very important,” said Pope. “It’s something we wanted to try and do and it’s amazing how many people bought in.”
Other runners believed the event was a good ‘confidence booster’ and ‘fun’.

“I like to stay fit and healthy, try to lose some weight. So far I am down 47 pounds and I just keep going,” said Prentis McCarty, who ran the half-marathon.

“When I get older, I want to run marathons,” said Hunter Dwyer, who ran the fun run.
