Tristan Thomas is an unlikely hero. That’s because he’s just four years old.
But that didn’t stop him from knowing exactly what to do when his grandpa, who was watching him at the time, had a diabetic episode.
“My papa’s sugar dropped,” Tristan Thomas said, recounting the story of how he helped save his grandfather’s life.
Tristan was being watched by his grandpa, Christopher. Christopher said he believes he didn’t eat enough lunch, so when he took his insulin for the day, it wasn’t balanced correctly, making his blood sugar drop dangerously low. He said him and Tristan took a nap. But when Tristan woke up, Christopher didn’t budge.
“He couldn’t wake me up and that’s when I guess that’s when he started calling everybody,” said Christopher Thomas.
Tristan was able get ahold of his grandpa’s phone. He then went through the phone and started tapping the pictures of faces he knew, one of those being his aunt.
“My daughter called me…’Mama, you got to call 911 to Daddy’s house,’ and I said ‘what’s wrong?’ and she goes ‘Tristan just called me,'” said Valerie Cubit, Tristan’s grandmother.
EMS rushed to the house and actually called Tristan back on his grandpa’s phone. During that call, he said they talked about Christopher’s symptoms. When first responders arrived on scene, Tristan unlocked the door and let them inside.
Tristan, now calling himself, “Tristan Thomas Hero.”
Tristan’s mom, Ebony, was proud to see Tristan handle a scary situation like this. She said that she takes the time to talk to her son about the importance of knowing what to do in case of an emergency, especially knowing her father’s condition.
“Every time we’ve had an issue happen and he’s been around I tell him, ‘If you’re with papa, you call somebody if he gets sick,'” Said Ebony Thomas.
And obviously all that practice paid off.
“I could have been in a coma. It could have been a lot worse,” said Christopher.
