If there’s any build-up of dust or dirt in a home it could be affecting the occupants’ health.

“The most common service call we get at Aire Serv is replacing your filters, people are like hey my heaters not working, hey my heaters not working and we go out there and it’s a dirty filter,” said James Russell, owner of Aire Serv.

Russell said another thing a person would have to worry about are the health issues that come from not changing the filter.

“There’s more contaminants in the air, there’s a lot more pollen and dust in the air, whenever you’re breathing, it will aggravate your sinuses and your lungs,” Russell said.

Russell said it’s okay to change your filter once every three months on normal circumstances, however if there is a dust storm it’s preferable to change it right after.

Also, car experts said changing the filter in the car is just as important.

“The compartment filter helps to capture that and help the vehicle run, keeping all of that dirt and debris out of the cab so we don’t have to breathe it in,” Russell said.

Josh Page, with Christian Brothers, said he recommends changing it after every second or third oil change.

Russell said it’s best to replace them sooner rather than later because if not the bill will be higher.

“Replacing your air filter can lower the cost of your efficiency bill for your ac or heater by up to 15-percent,” Russell said.
