Mother’s Day can be a difficult time for some mothers who may not be celebrating with their child by their side. International Bereaved Mother’s Day, on Sunday, gave mothers experiencing pregnancy or infant loss, the opportunity to support each other.
“Every case is different. Speaking for us, I think he would have suffered more for him living versus him passing,” said Angela Garza, who lost her child 16 years ago.
Garza along with other mothers and families gathered in Maxey Park for a balloon release, organized by Pregnancy and Infant Loss Awareness (PILA) Lubbock.
Families wrote messages on balloons to their lost children or siblings, prior to releasing them into the sky.
“It’s essentially symbolic of sending the message to your baby in heaven,” said Suzy Emre, founder of PILA. Emre lost two of her own children and one grandchild during pregnancy.
Approximately 40 people showed up to say a prayer and to write a message on a balloon.
“I truly believe everyone goes through something for a reason. I think we went through this so we can help other families going through this as well, especially since we are so far out of our loss,” said Garza.
